Equal Opportunity under Assault in Colorado
Indy Hour Thursday February 28, 2008
Citizens Project’s Barb Van Hoy led a discussion about the deceptively-titled “Colorado Civil Rights Initiative,” a proposed constitutional amendment likely to be on the Colorado ballot in November 2008. It would eliminate many of the programs that grew out of the civil rights movement that help provide equal opportunity to women and people of color. Affirmative action programs would essentially be banned under this measure, even math & science programs for girls, culturally-appropriate tutoring for struggling minority students, and health programs aimed at underserved communities. An alternative ballot measure is being proposed that would preserve these vital programs.
