November 2025 Coordinated Election – school board candidates

School boards in Colorado get their authority from the state, but have broad discretion on implementing state standards, including, among other things, the implementation of non-discrimination laws, curriculum and other educational programs, and establishing policy for school safety and security. They are also responsible for hiring and evaluating the superintendent, establishing compensation and performance standards for all personnel, and setting the district’s budget.

Our questions were crafted based on the expectations of the office that candidates are pursuing, with the goal in mind of demystifying this critical local government and providing voters with relevant information, described from the candidate’s perspective.

We did not receive responses from all candidates, but candidate websites and contact information are listed for voters’ easy reference.

Ballot issues

We are also proud to endorse a YES vote on Issues LL and MM! In 2022, the Healthy School Meals for All (HSMA) program brought in $12.4 million more than expected. Normally, under Colorado law, that extra money would be returned to some of the wealthiest taxpayers in the state.

Proposition LL is asking voters to let the state continue funding healthy school meals. Proposition MM will keep funding for free school meals by slightly reducing tax breaks for those who make over $300,000 a year. The money will support free healthy school meals, buying food from local farmers, and better pay for cafeteria workers.

Why Citizens Project supports it: Every student deserves good food so they can learn and grow, local farmers benefit, and school staff are treated more fairly.

We also recommend a YES vote for the Widefield District 3 bond measure and Mill Levy Override (MLO). This is a local funding measure for schools by an increase in tax. In this case, the bond increase will be $3 in tax and the MLO increase will be $2.50 to generate $88 million and $5.2 million respectively. It will pay for: HVAC (heating and cooling systems) systems and infrastructure, college and career readiness, and career and technical education.
